Source Verification and Reference Organization in the AI Era
Citations Are the Foundation of Reliability in Reports and Papers
In an era when AI can generate text, it is especially important to show where the evidence in the main text comes from. APA Style identifies core reference-list elements such as author, date, title, and source. Literature cited in the main text also needs to correspond to entries in the reference list.Always Verify References Suggested by AIis important.
Basic Checks for Citations and References
When using other people's ideas, statistics, definitions, or theories, indicate the source in the main text.
List the literature cited in the main text at the end in the required format.
Check the author name, publication year, title, journal, publisher, DOI, and URL.
Introduce the other author's claim and then clearly distinguish your own discussion from it.
Do not use bibliographic information or explanations from AI without checking them against the original source.
Common Sources for Verifying Literature
How to Check References Suggested by AI
| ConfirmItem | What to Check | Points of caution |
|---|---|---|
| Author and Year | Does the researcher exist, and is the publication year correct? | AI may generate plausible but nonexistent author names |
| Paper Title | Does it exactly match the search result? | Beware of fabricated references with titles that only partly resemble real papers |
| Journal Name, Volume, and Issue | Can the journal, volume, issue, and page numbers be verified? | Cross-check using the DOI or publisher page |
| Content of the Paper | Does the AI's explanation match the claims made in the paper? | Do not cite based only on a summary |
| Citation Style | Does it conform to the required style? | Follow APA, MLA, Chicago, or institution-specific requirements |
What to Avoid in Citations
Unsupported Assertions
Provide evidence for statistics, definitions, theories, and conclusions from previous studies.
Excessive Copying and Pasting
Using text without quotation marks or source attribution can create a risk of plagiarism.
Unverified AI References
References suggested by AI may not exist, so always verify them.
Common Checkpoints
What information is included in APA format?
As a basic rule, verify the author, date, title, and source. Depending on the source type, DOI or URL, journal name, volume, issue, and pages may also be required.
Can I use references suggested by AI as they are?
No. References suggested by AI may not exist or may have different content, so always verify them using CiNii, J-STAGE, publisher pages, DOI records, or similar sources.
Will too many citations lower the evaluation?
The number of citations itself is less important than how they are used and connected to your own discussion. If the main text is filled only with cited material, originality becomes weaker.
